There are lots of moments in a day that we want to note and cherish. These may be things that even the people closest to you won't care about. However, we all have a tendency in us to etch them in this big world. Is this how social networking updates work as a new medium? We update our status. We post photos of some highlights in the day or season. We let people know. some, we keep private.

Beyond tangible journals, I believe, many if not all, have some point of recording and describing how the world appears to us, in our eye view.

My Grandma Gay's diary like Aunt Maggie's, except once in a while she showed she could say a lot in few words.

Feb 1940: went to the dentist. had a root canal. It was no fun.

Dec 4, 1941: Dr. here to see Horace (Her husband). He said that Horace was better. We ate lunch and Horace took a nap. ... He never woke up.

I have more of the details having grown up with her and she wrote down her life story for us. But I think her entries though short gives a lot of the story.
